The Press proved to be too much of a competitor for the Minnesotian, and in a short time Dr. Inquisitor - generalFriar Thomas de Torquemada, of whom Llorente says that it was hardly possible that there could have been another man so capable of fulfilling the intentions of King Ferdinand, by multiplying confiscations those of the court of Rome, by propagating their jurisdictional and pecuniary maxims and those of the projectors of the Inquisition, by infusing terror into the people by public executions. Īs, however, these diversified and almost numberless experiments were frequently productive of useful inventions in arts and manufactures and, as many chemical remedies of real value were thereby accidentally discovered, great and almost general attention to those bold projectors was constantly kept alive and excited. The result of all this investigation is published in a folio volume of 607 pages, filled with facts and principles, the lamentable history of the past, painful descriptions of the present, and wise suggestions for the future management of the army and the whole is worthy of the careful attention of all who, as projectors, leaders, or followers, have anything to do with the active operations of war. The vehicle, however, has not formed the sole obstacle to those projectors : the viaticum, especially the food, has been a difficulty not readily got over.
